I was first introduced to Natalie's work when I had been (and still am) on a kick with the popular youtube channel SoulPancake. This is channel that features Rainn Wilson, Kid President, and Miss Natalie Patterson. SoulPancake has content with different kinds of series that have touched me in different kind of ways. It shows people what there is to look at in life. Natalie has some of the best poems that pull at your heartstrings in different ways. Here is what she had to say.
1. What draws you to your passion?
Initially, I was drawn to poetry because I had things I needed to say and no one was listening to me. Now, people are listening and I want to say things that are important that the world is too busy being obsessed with pop culture to slow down and think about. Writing is free and accessible. I think as my wealth grows, I'll shift into combining poetry and fine art.
2. What is your favorite piece of work that you have created? And why?
That's so hard. I love different work for different reasons. I really love the work I am most brave in. So anything that scares the crap out of me, I'm thrilled with because I know it's growing me. The SoulPancake project "That's What She Said" was challenging and most rewarding. I had to write and shoot a poem every week for 6 weeks on topics that challenged me. I had to figure out what I wanted to say to the one million people that would watch.
3. Do you find yourself, more alive, more in tune with who you really are, when creating something of your own?
Of course, that is the point of creating-- to see yourself more wholly and clearly.
4. How do you think others can find what they are passionate about?
In order to find the thing you are passionate about you have to be passionately looking for it. Try new things, get out into the world, meet new people, go places you typically wouldn't go. Take a class or workshop, read a new book, talk to strangers and most importantly do the self work. If you calm down enough and listen to yourself the answers are hard wired into your being. You just have to be brave enough to take action once you know.
5. Any advice for people out there, trying to figure out what they want out of life?
Make amends with your past and go fearlessly into the future with an open heart.
